MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The winner of the 16th Annual Bi-Lo Myrtle Beach Marathon is 47-year-old Dean Thompson, from Georgia. WMBF News' Alex Holley confirmed that he won with a final time of 2:39:14.
The women's winner was 23-year-old Regina Horak from Madison, Wisconsin, with a time of 2:54:19.
The 16th Annual Myrtle Beach Marathon started at 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
There were about 10,000 participating in all the races this weekend. Runners completed 26.2 miles in the Bi-Lo Marathon, and 13.1 miles in the Dasani Half-Marathon.
The winners of the Dasani Half Marathon are 34-year-old Jay Upchruch for the men, with a time of 1:10:34, and 44-year-old Julie Vaughn for the women, with a time of 1:17:41.
The race started at Grissom Parkway, just north of 21st Avenue North, and finished at Pelicans Ball Park on 21st Avenue North.
The marathon didn't have a typical start - Bubbles the Elephant greeted runners just minutes before the race got underway at 6:30 a.m.
This fits in with the theme this year's marathon - which is benefiting The Rare Species Fund for International Wildlife Conservation.
You may not know that Bubbles is quite the local celebrity –she's starred in Ace Ventura 2, a Janet Jackson music video and even some magazine photo shoots and ads.
