FLORENCE – Coastal Carolina opened the 2013 baseball season Friday afternoon with a 4-3 victory over James Madison. The game was played on the campus of Francis Marion – at Sparrow Stadium – and marks the eighth-straight year the Chanticleers have started the season with a win.
Colin Hering led the Chants, going 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Jacob May was 2-for-4 with what proved to be the game-winning RBI. Brothers Will and Zach Remillard each contributed a hit and an RBI in the win.
Tyler Herb, as he did last season against the Dukes, got the win on opening day. The junior allowed seven hits and three runs over five innings with three walks and a strikeout. The Chanticleer bullpen closed out the win. Patrick Corbett struck out two over two innings and Austin Kerr struck out one in his one inning. Freshman Seth Lamando worked the ninth to earn his first career save, striking one and allowing one hit.
