Tips for what to eat, drink and wear for Saturday's MB Marathon

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – If you've never run a marathon before, you may be wondering what to eat, drink and wear ahead of the big race Saturday.

WMBF News' Marla Branson will be running Saturday as she has in years past, and she has some good advice for first-timers and experts alike:

What runners eat can vary from person to person, but there are a couple of tips to follow if you're doing a marathon or half-marathon for the first time. Here are some marathon diet tips:

-Don't eat anything new on race day

-Eat plenty of carbs for dinner the night before

-Choose healthy options today - stay away from junk food

-Eat early tonight if you can

-Finish breakfast 90 minutes before race time

-Good breakfast options include: a bagel with peanut butter, a banana and an energy bar, or a bowl of cold cereal with a cup of milk

 One of the most important things about running a long distance is what you decide to wear. As a WMBF Meteorologist and a runner in tomorrow's half-marathon, Marla had these tips for staying warm but comfortable Saturday:

-Dress in layers

-Bring something you don't mind losing - or at least handing off to a family member along the course

-Wear comfortable running clothes you've worn before

-Wear a bright color so your loved ones can find you

-Plan on starting with a hat and gloves - that's where the heat gets lost
