A brief history of the Myrtle Beach Marathon

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The Myrtle Beach Marathon has a very rich history going back to 1996 - that's when a local group ran the Chicago marathon and got the idea to have their own race.

The first one was run in February 1998 and featured Olympic gold medalist Gwen Torrence.

The fun run was added in 1999, the half-marathon in 2002, and the 5K in 2003.

In 2011, Kathleen Castles was the first woman to win the overall race; she qualified for the Olympic trials with her time.

The very first race had just 2,400 participants, and by 2009 the event hosted 12,000.
