Soldier home from Afghanistan surprises mom and kids

Meet April Trent. She served with the 178th Engineer Battalion out of Rock Hill, SC in Afghanistan while her mother cared for their two children, David and Camryn.

Her late husband Nelson Trent was assigned to the 56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 36th Infantry Division, Fort Worth, Texas. April commuted from Texas to Rock Hill, SC as a national guard member. When Nelson was killed in action last December, she returned home for his burial at the Arlington National Cemetery and was swiftly deployed back to the battlefield.

Today, she invited WMBF News to join her in a surprise reunion with her family. April was given an early release from the National Guard after he husband's passing, so her mother and two children didn't know she was coming home.

Our photographer was on hand when she was reunited with her kids at North Myrtle Beach Elementary School Thursday afternoon.

Did me mention that's it is also April's birthday?

Please join us in wishing April the happiest of birthday and thanking her and her late husband for their service to our country!
