DILLON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) Dillon County could soon be expanding the Dillon County Airport.
The Dillon County Administrator, Clay Young, told WMBF News that final documents were mailed to the F.A.A. for final approval.
Dillon County is qualified to receive a grant that will cover 90 percent of the three to four million dollar expansion. The other ten percent will come from county and state.
City leaders said that this entire project has been a five year process, and they are glad to see the plans on the fast track to approval.
An expanded runway, T-hangers and a fueling station are all a part of the expansion plans.
Young said this project is needed to help build Dillon County's economical future.
"Just by having those extra planes here in the county were hoping to bring in economical development through those activities here," Young said."If we bring in the fuel we think that should make us more attractive for other activities out there too."
Young believes that people who travel the east coast will be attracted to the airport because of the hotels, restaurants and entertainment that Dillon County has to offer.
If approved the renovation will be constructed in phases, phase one is uprooting trees. Young said the trees have to be moved so that the runway can be expanded. Phase two includes re-surfacing the runway and adding T-hangers. And the project will finish with the addition of a fueling station.
Young said that the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission has worked closely with the county to ensure a concrete plan.
Young added that if this plan is passed by the F.A.A. construction will begin in the spring.
