GARDEN CITY, SC (WMBF) - One man is spending time behind bars after being named in the armed robbery of a Garden City convenience store.
The clerk at that Kangaroo gas station on Highway 17 South in Garden City says Sunday morning she was going about her normal routine when a man entered the store.
She went behind the counter to get the cigarettes he asked for when he presented a silver knife, which he pointed at her as he leaned over the counter.
According to the Horry County Police incident report, the man asked her for the money in the cash register. She explained that she would have to void the purchase of the cigarettes in order to open the drawer again, after which she was able to give him the $45 the drawer contained.
The report states he then told her to go into the bathroom and count to 100. From the restroom she heard the front door bell and assuming the man had fled she called 911.
When police arrived they observed the whole incident on video surveillance and were able to identify the suspect from his vehicle registration. Myrtle Beach resident 49-year-old Hezekiah Bethea was arrested and charged with armed robbery.
