10 arrested in Florence County drug sweep

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - A recent drug sweep in Florence County locked 10 people in jail and the Florence County Sheriff's Office said they are cracking down to remove drugs from the county's streets.

One woman told WMBF News that drugs are a problem on the streets of Lake City.

"I don't care to live in the Lake City area in town, because of the crime and the gun violence and drugs, Tinisha Burgess said.

Burgess lives in Lake City, but she said due to the recent rise in crime, she is considering moving.

According to the Florence County Sheriff's Office, the recent drug sweep was a team effort that took months of planning to bring down the amount of criminals that it did.

Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff's Office said the entire investigation began with calls from citizens reporting drug usage in their area.

"Our narcotics division started conducting an undercover operation to find out what kind of transactions were going on," Nunn said.

Oxycodone, Oxycotin and Loritab were just a few prescription drugs that investigators found.

By the end of the investigation, nine people were charged with distribution of scheduled medications. A tenth person was charged with possession of illicit drugs.

Burgess said that she gives the Florence County Sheriff's office two thumbs up for its work. Nunn said that the Sheriff's Office recognizes there is still work to be done.

"By no means have we eradicated the problem here," he said. "The point was that we respond to citizens' complaint and deploy our assets to try and interdict these problems and these drugs."
