LUMBERTON, NC (WMBF) - A detective with the Lumberton Police Department has died after crashing his motorcycle on a sharp curve.

Sgt. Daniel Hilburn with the North Carolina Highway Patrol confirms that crash occurred on McRainey Road just 1.8 miles north of St. Pauls, NC.

Fifty-three-year-old Detective Duane Swell Hunter was driving his 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle when he rounded a curve and ran off the right side of the road, striking a highway sign that warns drivers of the "short curve."

The cycle overturned and Hunter was ejected, landing himself and his bike in the ditch.

Hunter succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton Monday morning.
