Local teen takes to the field for Super Bowl 47

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE RIVER, SC (WMBF) – While many of you watched the game from home, a local teenager was watching from the sidelines. Haley Thomas, 19, is a winner of a Pepsi competition, bringing her right in the middle of all the action of Super Bowl 47.

It started with a text from Haley Thomas' coach, saying he just saw a commercial for a competition to meet Beyonce at the Super Bowl. It was quickly encouraged by her mom.

"I inspired her to do it, take a picture every day. If you don't enter, you don't know if you'll win," says Linda Thomas, Haley's mom.

Her little sister, Macy, helped take the pictures for Pepsi.

"I thought it was just to try, I didn't expect her to get the phone call and get this awesome opportunity," says Macy Thomas, Haley's sister.

While her family was getting ready to look for her in the crowds on TV, Haley Thomas was in New Orleans getting ready for the big game.

"Meeting Beyonce is what I'm most excited about. But so is the football game, just being at the Super Bowl, in this environment. Not many people get to do that," says Haley Thomas, a 2011 graduate from North Myrtle Beach High School.

Haley was front and center during tonight's half-time show.

"I've actually already seen the half-time show four times," she says, "it was different every time, they made some tweaks because it was rehearsal, so we got to make to see the making of everything, so it was cool."

Her family says it is fitting she gets to meet Beyonce; Haley just dressed up like her favorite singer this past Halloween.

"The crowd you see around the stage, there's only 50 of us invited to the after party with all the famous people," Thomas explains.

She says she's watched the game on TV, but being in person is indescribable. She hopes to be an event planner and is seeing first-hand what goes into planning one of the biggest events of the year.

"I want to be an event planner, so seeing how they put everything together leads into what I want to do personally," Thomas says.

At home, her sister says she doesn't usually watch the Super Bowl, but this year is different.

"Today I'm going to be watching the half time show to see if I can see my sister, that'd be really exciting," says Macy Thomas, Haley's sister.

Like most families watching the big game, the Thomas family was especially interested in watching the commercials because the pictures Haley sent in to Pepsi were part of their ad during the game.
