MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A big part of Myrtle Beach International's expansion plan opened its doors for the first time Wednesday.
The new car rental building is now open to the public. Airport officials say the building opening is a big deal, because for many people, it will be their introduction to Myrtle Beach.
A recent survey showed nearly half of all the traffic coming through the airport will go straight to the rental car facility, and that figure indicates even more will stop through during the tourist season. Now the airport has added on more services, and there will be nine different rental car companies for people to choose from.
The airport also put up its brand new official sign at the main entrance off Harrelson Boulevard so drivers will know exactly where to go.
With these changes, you might say the airport's big plans finally look to be coming together, and now all we're waiting on is the actual new terminal to open. Even with the delay, those working with the airport say things are still moving at a great pace.
"There's multiple moving parts that are involved," explained Kirk Lovell, spokesperson for the Myrtle Beach International Airport. "Everything is still moving forward. And progress is being made. It's gonna be a great project when it's complete."
The actual terminal isn't expected to open until mid March due to a delay in materials being delivered.
While we're waiting on the entire expansion project to be complete, other projects may soon be starting up next to the airport. Horry County and Myrtle Beach leaders are discussing changing the zoning to allow business to set up next to the airport. Some county leaders feel gas stations, hotels, and restaurants would help to boost up the airport's appeal.
