LONGS, SC (WMBF) - A home in Longs was almost completely destroyed by a fire Saturday afternoon.
When Horry County Fire and Rescue units arrived at about 2 p.m., 60 to 70 percent of the house, located in the 2900 block of Collins Circle, was already on fire, Captain David Howell said. Flames were coming out of the windows and there was a plume of smoke about 600 feet in the air, he said.
The fire was concentrated in the back of the structure, according to Howell, and several vehicles were also damaged.
"Our focus was to make sure the fire wasn't exposed to other structures, because it was almost a complete loss when we got here," Captain Howell told WMBF reporters on the scene.
Howell confirmed that no one was inside the home when the fire broke out. "The homeowner was actually down the street and it was reported to her by somebody else," he said.
The fire was a challenge to fight, as the nearest hydrant was over 1000 feet away, Howell said, adding, "These guys had to work really hard to get that water established."
Red Cross assistance wasn't needed, as the family had a place to stay.
Crews remained at the home to make sure the fire didn't start back up, and the cause of the fire is under investigation, Howell said.
