If you filed your South Carolina taxes electronically you most likely received a letter telling you that your information was comprised, or put another way - stolen - because the state did a poor job of protecting that personal data.
The state is offering one year of free credit monitoring, but if you want to protect yourself after that first year you're on the hook to cover those costs out of your own pocket.
Consider This: Whoever is responsible for this crime is not going to delete your valuable information after one year. And since we didn't create this problem, we shouldn't be held responsible for paying for protection after an arbitrary one year deadline.
Governor Haley, this is unacceptable. The state is responsible for this security breach and the state should pay for credit monitoring for a minimum of 10 years.
