MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The Family Kingdom Amusement Park is adding three new rides just ahead of the 2013 Summer Tourism season. Plans include a brand new roller coaster; the park's general manager confirms the new rides are at the park and will be erected soon.
Also happening along Ocean Blvd, the historic Chesterfield Inn was demolished last year and is now the construction site of a new oceanfront miniature golf course, roof-top restaurant, and arcade. Karon Mitchell, owner of the new project, says they should be open in early March. The Houghman Candy Factory also came down, and a new mega candy store is being built.
Nora Battle with the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce says these new projects help draw attention to the beach. New attractions and major renovations hook travel journalists and online travel bloggers. Last year, they created a nationwide buzz with the updates to the Myrtle Beach Speedway and the addition of the zip line at the old Pavilion Site. This year, the chamber and Grand Strand business owners are hoping for the same kind of success.
"Any time the chamber had something new that they can publicize, it's a positive," Mitchell said. "It gives people a new reason to come to Myrtle Beach."
The general manager for Family Kingdom says the new rides should be up and running in time for the park's spring opening.
