Volleyball tournament estimated to bring $2m to MB this weekend

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The Winter Bump Volleyball Tournament is giving businesses a bump in revenue this weekend, but because Myrtle Beach doesn't have a big enough facility, some teams had to play in Charleston.

This event is estimated to bring over $2 million to Myrtle Beach over the next three days, according to a coach for the tournament. Coaches believe Myrtle Beach is only scratching the surface of sports tourism, and just this week, the National Association of Sports Commissions released a new study showing a new indoor sports complex could raise Myrtle Beach's profile in the sport's world - an idea that players at today's tournament agree with.

They say if it wasn't for this weekend's tournament, they wouldn't be in Myrtle Beach during the winter months - but if there were an indoor facility, especially one made for volleyball, they would come here any time of the year.

"It would be nice if everything could be under one roof," said Jackie Godbold, a parent of one of the players. "Tomorrow, we will probably have to go to another facility to play.

The facility Myrtle Beach is considering would be able to host tournaments like the Winter Bump Volleyball Tournament, but could also be used for dance and cheerleading competitions.

The study projects an indoor sports complex could bring in an additional 55,000 visitors just over the first few years. Right now, city leaders are looking at the possibility of private investors or a partnership with local colleges to cover the cost.
