BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
The snow that started falling in west Alabama this morning is now moving through the eastern part of the state.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham has lifted the winter storm warning that was in effect for most of north-central Alabama.
The snow has caused hazardous driving conditions and multiple accidents are reported across the state. So far, no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported.
The sun has come out in several parts of the state, and temperatures are rising as the snow storm moves out. Road conditions in Walker County have greatly improved since earlier today, when local officials worked several wrecks on Highways 5 and 269.
Tuscaloosa police reported working 23 traffic accidents within a two hour period on Thursday. And while the heavy snow created problems for drivers, it made for a fun snow day for University of Alabama students, who joined in a massive snowball fight on the quad.
Local and state officials are still concerned about the possibility of black ice on the roadways as temperatures are expected to dip below freezing late tonight.
Several schools are delaying Friday classes for two hours or until 10 a.m. You can see the entire list of school, business and daycare closings at www.MyFoxClosings.com.
