COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A Columbia man has been charged with DUI and unlawful conduct towards a child after police say he had a blood-alcohol limit two times the legal limit while driving his 13-year-old daughter and her two friends home from a gymnastics and cheerleading school Tuesday night.

In addition to those charges, 51-year-old Don Milton Morris, Jr. is also charged with speeding.

According to a police incident report, it was the alleged speeding that allowed police to pull Milton over and discover his alleged drunk condition.

A Columbia officer was running radar on I-126 at Colonial Life Boulevard around 8:20 p.m. when he noticed Morris' eastbound Mazda MX-6 traveling at 79 mph in a 60 mph zone, the report stated.

The officer eventually caught up to Morris just past Greystone Boulevard.

As he reached the vehicle, the officer reported a strong smell of alcohol coming from the car and three 13-year-old females inside with Morris, according to the report.

According to the officer, Morris said he had a few beers a couple of hours before going to pick up his daughter and her friends at Flying High Academy in West Columbia.

After Morris had trouble with the field sobriety test, the officer read him his Miranda Rights and offered him a breath test, according to the report.

Morris registered a .16% blood alcohol content on the breath test, the officer said. In South Carolina, the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle is .08%.

Morris was transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
