4 charged for copper stolen from power poles

MARION COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The sheriff's office in Marion County has arrested four people believed to have stolen copper from power poles.

Twice Sheriff Mark Richardson says the copper lines were taken from power poles.

One of those incidents involved $2,200 worth of stolen copper by 26-year-old Christopher Williamson of Nichols and 27-year-old Charles Smith of Bennettsville.

Williamson has been charged with malicious injury to telephone, telegraph, or electric utility system and obtaining permit for purpose of transporting or selling stolen nonferrous metals.

Smith has been charged with accessory after the fact.

After $3,000 worth of cooper was stolen, police charged 29-year-old Brad Taylor of Dillon and 35-year-old James Sweat of Fork with malicious injury to telephone, telegraph, or electric utility system and obtaining permit for purpose of transporting or selling stolen nonferrous metals.

Sheriff Richardson says this charge is a felony, carrying up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
