Council approves plans for Pawley's Island shopping center

Georgetown County Council has approved changes to redevelopment plans for a Pawley's Island shopping center.

On Tuesday night, the council held a second reading on the plans for Pawley's Plaza, located off Highway 17.

The plans originally called for a 119,000-square-foot building, but vehement opposition by hundreds of Pawley's Island residents prompted the developer to go back to the drawing board.

Council approved revised plans which call for smaller facilities, which residents find vital to maintaining the quaint feel of the community.

A third and final reading on the issue is expected at the next County Council meeting in March.
