BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - The investigation into the death of an inmate at the Evans Correctional Institute in Bennettsville has been turned over to the State Law Enforcement Division.

That investigation was launched after an inmate was stabbed in the Bennettsville jail Sunday night. After being transported to the Marlboro Park Hospital, the man was pronounced dead.

Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown identified the inmate as 26-year-old James White. His death has been ruled a homicide.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections says the incident was turned over to SLED and any new details in the investigation would be released by them.
