Carolina Forest High School collects a penny for each life lost

Posted: Updated:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) Students at one Grand Strand high school may never look at pennies in the same way again.

Carolina Forest High School started what they call the "6 Million Penny Project" to raise $60,000 in donations for the Holocaust Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Drama teachers Pam Muise and Matt Ward came up with the penny project idea while organizing the production of  "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" . The play, by Celeste Raspanti, is based on a concentration camp survivor from Nazi Germany. This camp held 15,000 children, but only about 100 survived.

The "6 Million Penny Project" is inspired by the 6 million lives lost in concentration camps during WWII. The collection of all the pennies will help the students see how immense 6 million of something truly is.

Carolina Forest High School is trying to get the support of every school in the Horry County School District by having donation milk cartons placed throughout all of the county's classrooms. The surrounding community can also show their support by providing a donation over the phone with Carolina Forest High School. Donations will be collected until the end of the year.
