HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A collision with injuries has backed up traffic on Highway 17 Bypass between Glenns Bay Road and the Garden City Connector.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol has cleared the scene of the crash that occurred around 1:41 p.m.

Lance Corporal Sonny Collins says an ambulance was crossing the highway from the Garden City Connector when it was struck. The other car was traveling northbound on Highway 17 Bypass, and ran a red light to hit the ambulance and knock it on its side.

The driver's of both vehicles were transported to the hospital for treatment. Collins says there was not a patient in the back of the ambulance for transport at the time.

A reporter on the scene noted it was a Transmed ambulance.

Photos of the crash from businesses in the area show the ambulance on its side with parts of the roof removed by responding EMS.

The traffic cameras provided by the South Carolina Department of Transportation showed traffic backing up behind the crash in the southbound lanes of Highway 17. As of 2:50 p.m., Angela Howell reported traffic was clearing up in both the northbound and southbound lanes around the Garden City Connector, and a tow truck had arrived.
