Cumulus Media drops ESPN Radio for CBS, Mike and Mike still coming to golf event

MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) – Sports fans around the Grand Strand can still get their daily fix of sports on the same radio station, but they will not be hearing the same voices.

Earlier this week, Cumulus Media dropped ESPN Radio programming from its stations and picked up the new CBS Sports Radio Network.

Aaron Marks is a sports talk show host for Cumulus Media in Murrells Inlet.  He said the change caught everyone by surprise.

"We were ESPN on New Year's Day," said Marks.  "Then at midnight on New Year's Day going into January the 2nd we became CBS Sports Radio."

Marks said there are many listeners who are upset they can no longer listen to their favorite ESPN shows like Mike and Mike, The Herd, and the SVP Show.  However, there are still a good portion of listeners who like the change, Marks said.

"Certainly the people who like our local lineup and listen in to our local talk shows are thrilled."

One of the major concerns of loyal ESPN listeners was would Mike and Mike, from ESPN's Mike and Mike in the Morning, still make their annual trip to the Grand Strand for the Monday After the Masters Golf event to broadcast their show.

Bill Golden with Golf Holiday, the group who sponsors the event, reassured sports fans Thursday that ESPN and both the Mike's are coming again this year.

"Our deal with ESPN is we do that nationally so Mike and Mike are still coming," Golden said.

Golden said his company does a lot of advertising on ESPN Radio in dozens of other cities, most of which he said, still have a strong ESPN Radio presence.

"Our core markets are ESPN Radio markets and they still have a core following."

The Monday After the Masters is an event that helps put Myrtle Beach in the national spotlight as a golf destination, Golden said.  He hopes this year's event can encourage even more golf tourists to come to the Grand Strand.
