MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - One of several men suspected of beating a man over a stolen laptop is facing the music.

The alleged assault over the stolen laptop took place just moments after the new year rang in on Rockwater Circle in Myrtle Beach.

According to the incident report from Horry County Police, the occurrence came to light when officers were called to the South Strand Regional Medical emergency room where a male victim was receiving treatment after a beaten by four or five guys with "sticks and clubs."

When doctors discovered the victim had a depressed skull fracture, a wound they considered life threatening, the man was transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center for further treatment.

A witness to the beating went with police back to the scene of the crime where they located the green broom stick and white pipe used to inflict the victim's injuries. The report states there was also blood in the roadway and driveway.

The witness could identify only one of the men that "jumped" the victim. When police questioned that suspect, 23-year-old Efrem Arthur Barnard, they noticed a gray watch on his kitchen table with what appeared to be blood stains.

In the report Barnard admits that watch is his and the blood-stained white watch belongs to another man who had beaten the victim.

Barnard was taken into custody Tuesday morning and charged with attempted murder. His bond has not been set.
