One year later: Immediate family of SC murder victim breaks silence

Chesterfield County, S.C. (WBTV) -

It's been a little more than a year since a Chesterfield County woman was brutally murdered after leaving a gas station.

On Thursday, for the first time, we heard from the immediate family of the Hope Melton. Melton's sister, Chandra Garces, spoke about Hope's death and forgiveness for her accused killer. Garces says she doesn't hate the man accused of brutally beating and murdering her sister. But she believes he should be brought to justice.

Police say 23-year-old Nickolas Miller followed Melton after she left a gas station in Chesterfield County in late December 2011. They say he ran her off the road then killed her. Melton was on her way to her grandmother's home at the time. A year after her death, Melton's sister is still coping.

"I'm taking it day by day. I'm trying to remember the happy times that we've had together instead of the bad."but I have to be strong too for her and I don't want her life to be in vain and I want to help others through this," Garces told Raycom affiliate WIS.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Miller. So far, no trial date has been set. Miller is in jail without bond.
