LONGS, SC (WMBF) - A woman spent time behind bars after the nurse at her son's school reported suspected abuse to police.

The alleged abuse was reported to Horry County Police on Friday, Dec. 14 by an elementary school nurse. That nurse says the 9-year-old male victim told her his mother beat him with a belt just for playing with his little brother.

The incident report states fresh bruises to the boy's shoulders, front and back, and left arm were visible. There was also a scratch down the center of his back.

The report states the officer," could see possible rivot holes marked into the bruising congruent with the belt the victim described."

When police met with the boy's mother she said she beat the boy because he was misbehaving and causing trouble at school, but "did admit that she went over-board with the punishment."

Barbara Shenette Smith, 27, was taken into custody and charged with cruelty to children. She was released from J. Reuben Long Detention Center on $500 bond.
