A high school senior created an online empire by selling ugly Christmas sweaters. (Source: WTMJ/CNN)MILWAUKEE (WTMJ/CNN) - A teenager has created an online ugly Christmas sweater empire in his basement.
Jack McCarthy, 18, has created the website UltimateUglyChristmas.com to sell refurbished sweaters. It began with selling one online three years ago.
"We sold it on eBay and it went for about $50," said McCarthy. "We were surprised that sweaters would have that kind of market."
Inspired by the availability of the clientele, McCarthy built a collection at every flea market, thrift store and yard sale across multiple states. The results were his website.
The prices of the tacky collection range from $20 to $50 each.
"The more colorful, the more action, the more eye-popping things, tThat's our definition of ugly," McCarthy said.
Now McCarthy ships out 40 sweaters daily.
