Source: The Sun NewsNORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - The North Myrtle Beach City Council is considering an ordinance giving lifeguards and beach patrol officers authority over whether surf fishermen can cast their lines.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported the council has approved the first reading of the ordinance. It gives lifeguards and beach patrol officers the authority to ask surf fishermen to move or stop fishing if they're deemed unsafe to the public.
The council is considering the ordinance after receiving complaints this summer, including one that a child got wrapped in a fishing line.
Fishermen who refuse to move would be subject to punishment by a fine of up to $500, up to 30 days in jail, or both.
