GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WCSC/WMBF) -The wife of an off-duty state trooper who resigned Monday after he was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run incident which hurt three pedestrians has been charged with filing a false police report.

Sergeant Jeff Benton with the Horry County Sheriff's Office confirmed Wednesday 30-year-old Crystal Bridges, the wife of former South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Christopher Lee Bridges, tried to cover her husband's tracks by reporting his car stolen.

According to Georgetown County deputies, Bridges reported a vehicle stolen from the Beaver Bar, located at 3537 Highway 17 in Murrells Inlet, around 12:30 a.m. Monday morning.

That call came almost 24 hours after her husband struck three people on the side of Jason Boulevard, just off Highway 501, around 3:20 a.m. Sunday, according to Horry County investigators.

Afterwards he got out of his vehicle to check on pedestrians, and then left the scene of the accident, authorities say.

Benton said Wednesday that Bridges was trying to cover for her husband, who submitted his resignation on Monday after being charged with three counts of leaving the scene of an accident with minor injury.

The charges against the state trooper came after questioning by Horry Co. investigators on Sunday.

Crystal Bridges is being held in the Georgetown County Detention Center, awaiting a bond hearing. Her husband was granted a $3,000 bond Monday in Horry County.
