GEORGETOWN, SC (WMBF) - A joint operation by Georgetown Police and state authorities has landed two men in jail for trafficking heroin and cocaine.

The Georgetown Police Department boasted about the success of the joint operation with the 15th Circuit Solicitor's Drug Enforcement Unit, DEA, SLED and Georgetown County Sheriff's Office on their Facebook page.

The ongoing investigation into illegal trafficking of heroin and cocaine in the Georgetown area led officers to search two homes and three vehicles, seizing 1/4 a kilo of heroin and 100 grams of cocaine.

The also seized a 2007 Tahoe when they arrested 29-year-old Derek Thompson Owens of Murrells Inlet and 21-year-old Edmund Dechane Holmes of Georgetown.

15th Circuit Drug Enforcement Agents say they received tips about the trafficking, launched a nearly six month investigation. The investigation came to a head Sunday, when DEU Field Supervisor Dean Bishop says authorities were able to track down Holmes. Bishop says Owens happened to be with Holmes at the time of the arrest.

"[Owens] was an associate of the target of the investigation and he happened to be with him when we stopped the vehicle," Bishop says.

No bond has been set for either suspect, and Georgetown City Police say they expect more arrests in the case.

Bishop says the arrests will help keep dangerous drugs off the street in both Horry and Georgetown County.

"If they're dealing with people in Georgetown County, then they're dealing with people in Horry County as well," Bishop says.
