CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - A Conway Police Corporal spent just an hour and a half behind bars after police say he assaulted his wife during an argument over a car crash.

Before arriving at the home on Highway 813 on Thurs., November 29, Horry Co. Police officers were told a the suspect's wife was being abused, and she was bleeding.

When they arrived on scene, the report states they noticed the odor of alcohol on 34-year-old John Edwards.

Edwards admitted to the officers that he had been arguing with his wife, who also appeared to be intoxicated.

Edwards' wife claims the couple was burdened financially and her husband was angry with her about the accident she got in earlier that day.

After inspecting the house the officer noted a large hole in the sheet rock, blood stains on the floor and sheets, and injuries to the wife.

Edwards was taken into custody and charged with criminal domestic violence.

He was released from J. Reuben Long Detention Center on $1,000 bond after an hour and half on Thursday afternoon.

Conway City Administrator Bill Graham tells WMBF News that Edwards is employed by the Conway Police Department, and that he has been placed on suspension without pay effective Wednesday while the department investigates the matter.

Graham says Edwards has been with the department for eight years, and is now a corporal.
