Cold case murder suspect extradited to Horry County

Posted: Updated:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Now that a suspect has been arrested in Arkansas, Horry County Police are one step closer to closing the books on a 12-year-old murder case.

The suspect, Jose Tostado, was arrested in Arkansas Friday morning for a domestic offense.

Lt. Mark Clark with the Bald Knob Police Department reports he gave the name "Alfredo Olmos" to police officers on the scene, just before he was arrested and charged with assault on a family member.

During questioning, Tostado detailed many aspects of his life during his residence in South Carolina, and reported all the different aliases he used.

In conversation with the authorities in Arkansas, Tostado admitted that he knew of a murder that occurred outside the Sambo's nightclub on Green Sea Road in South Carolina.

After contacting the Horry County Sheriff's Office, they found Tostado's name listed as a suspect in the unsolved murder of 26-year-old migrant worker Alfonso Fuentes in 2000.

Horry County Police have been searching for Tostado and another suspect, who had been fighting with the victims before the shooting, since 2000. He was wanted for murder and assault and battery with intent to kill.

Tostado admitted to Arkansas authorities that the rifle used to gun down Fuentes did belong to him, but "the trigger man was Andreas," though he did not know the man's full name.

Tostado says after the shooting, he and the other suspect parted ways in Mississippi and he went on to Arkansas. He believes "Andreas" may be hiding in Mexico.

He was extradited back to Horry County and booked in J. Reuben Long on Tuesday morning.

Charges have not been listed.
