Winning Powerball numbers drawn

Posted: Updated:

Millions of Americans purchased bought Powerball tickets ahead of Wednesday's record drawing, in hopes of winning millions of dollars.

The lucky numbers drawn Wednesday were 5-23-16-22-29, Powerball 6.

The jackpot was boosted to $500 million on Tuesday and raised again Wednesday morning to $550 million, with a cash option of $360.2 million. CNN then reported the total jumped to $580 million by Wednesday night.

While Powerball officials said there was a 75 percent of drawing a winner Wednesday, there is in fact still a greater chance to get struck by lightning.

"These are the winning tickets I promise you I'm going to do a lot of good with it," said Peggy Gibson right after she bought tickets.  "I'm going to give a lot of money to charity, because a lot of people need it."

Though the odds may not have been in your favor, someone somewhere will have the winning ticket, the Associated Press predicted.

Lottery officials have reportedly discovered that tickets with the winning numbers were bought in those two states. It has not been announced how many winners will split the jackpot.

Tickets for Wednesday night's drawing were reportedly selling at a rate of 130,000 per minute.

Shortly after the drawing, the Powerball website temporarily crashed from the high volume of traffic.

According to NBC News, nearly 9 million people won smaller prizes from Wednesday night's drawing.
