COLUMBIA - The Johnsonville Flashes took an undefeated 13-0 record into the SCHSL Class A, Division I state championship game on Friday afternoon at Benedict College in Columbia. Waiting for them was the Christ Church Cavaliers, the defending state champions, who defeated the Lake View Wild Gators in last year's state title game.
Johnsonville got out to a quick start, thanks to a Tately Anderson interception that put Johnsonville in good field position. Brison Allison then ran in a 24-yard touchdown to make it 6-0 Flashes after the extra point missed.
Christ Church then went on to score ten unanswered points to lead 10-6 at halftime.
Lewis Lineberger's team struck early in the second half, when Brison Allison picked up his second touchdown of the day, this time from 17 yards out to put Johnsonville in front 12-10. Tushai Edwards added to it with a 77-yard touchdown run to make it 18-10.
However, the Cavaliers' comeback began soon after. Demetrius Anthony scored his second touchdown of the day on the quarterback keeper, and after a two-point conversion, the game was tied at 18.
After a Johnsonville three-and-out, the Flashes tried to punt, but the snap went over the head of Hunter Springs, and into the endzone for a safety, giving Christ Church a 20-18 lead. Quan White then ran the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown. The Cavaliers would hold on to win the state title for a second straight year, 27-18.
This year marks the second time in school history the Flashes have won 13 games, and is their third second-place finish in the state.
