(CNN) - For some, the holidays are the only time of year they head to the airport, while others may be used to flying for business, but without the kids.
To navigate holiday travel with the whole family, Jeanenne Tornatore from the travel website Orbitz recommends minimizing the stress and the travel fees.
"The big one is checked baggage fees, upwards of $25 per bag if you need to check bags on most of the major airlines today," Tornatore said. "If you can get it all in a carry-on, and every member of your family can get it all in a carry-on, that's the way to go to save some money."
Tornatore also suggests packing a carry-on with essentials to get through to get through unexpected layovers.
Anything like formula or diapers that you would need for your children in a 24-hour period, make sure you bring plenty in that carry-on bag should your flight get delayed or canceled.
At TSA checkpoints, look for family-friendly lanes.
"Remember that in most of the major airports there are family-specific lanes," Tornatore said. "That will not only help you get through the airport security lines faster, but it will help all of the other people get through as well."
Tornatore also suggests asking if your airport has a designated play area where kids can burn off energy pre-flight.
