MYR parking lots full, holiday crowds slim

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The crowd of holiday travelers have come and gone through the Myrtle Beach International Airport on the busiest travel day of the year.

On the eve of Thanksgiving, there are over 20 flights departing for Charlotte, Atlanta, New York, Boston and Washington, D.C. The airport terminals are also expecting 25 incoming flights from the same destinations.

MYR spokesman Kirk Lovell says the Long Term and Economy Parking lots are already full. MYR has opened up their overflow lot with 260 spaces and have shuttles transporting eager flyers to the terminal.

"It's something we've prepared for," Lovell said. "We're used to it."

You can check the status of your flight on Myrtle Beach International's website.

It's big travel days like this that help MYR economically. The airport has seen decreases in the number of passengers rushing in and out of their doors, but Lovell says cutbacks and decreases are a national trend right now.

"As the industry is trying to save money, they're cutting capacity," he said. "That's affected our airport, as well as airports all over the United States."

Some airport employees commented that the flow of people through the building seemed a little slower than Thanksgivings past. Lovell says they expect bigger crowds on Sunday.
