HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - AAA Carolinas says Wednesday is the biggest travel day for the Grand Strand and Pee Dee. You can expect it to be a little busier than usual on the roads, as more people are choosing to spend their holiday away from home this year.

"We travel about say, every other year, and sometimes it's a hassle, but I'm hoping not this year," said Ed Schurich, who plans to drive to Charlotte for the holidays.

Experts say drivers should keep hoping. Almost 6,000 more drivers are expected to share the roads with you, and it's all thanks to the prices we're seeing at the pump. Myrtle Beach currently has the lowest gas prices in the state, and South Carolina has the second lowest average in the nation.

People don't seem to be surprised that lower gas prices mean a higher number of cars will be out on the road.

"They have been coming down consistently," said driver Gigi Campbell. "And people have endured so much over the past couple of years. So I especially think this is the time that they put all that aside and say, 'hey, let's spend a few extra pennies to go visit some family'."

About 600,000 South Carolinians are expected to head out the door Wednesday to travel. Most of them will be out on the roads, as fewer people will choose to fly the friendly skies. AAA Carolinas says only 8 percent of travelers in the Carolinas will take a trip to the airport.
