CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – Rate increases are commonplace with many bills in day-to-day life, but a service surcharge from one cable company in the Grand Strand has customers up in arms.
"The paperwork clearly states it's a price lock for a two year period," said Sam Coccia, who recently switched to Time Warner Cable because of the low price for his internet and television bundle.
Coccia, along with thousands of other Time Warner Cable customers in the Grand Strand and Pee Dee, received notice this week they'd receive a $3.95 surcharge for their internet modems.
"That's not fair," Coccia said. "Their commitment was a price lock for two years."
Coccia says it's not the fee itself that has him upset, but rather the fact he was never made aware of a fee increase when he signed his agreement with the cable company.
"I didn't sign anything that says anything about a rate increase on equipment," he said.
Rose Dangerfield, spokesperson for Time Warner Cable, says the charge goes towards service and equipment maintenance and repair, but customers can opt out of the charge simply by purchasing their own modem.
Time Warner Cable has a list of several modems compatible with their service. Customers can see that list at www.twc.com/approveddevices.
