FRAUD ALERT: Santee Cooper customers target of scam

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Santee Cooper is warning their customers of a scam specifically targeting those they provide to.

On their Facebook page, the utility company wrote:

We're hearing about a scam targeting our customers, especially commercial customers, demanding credit card numbers for bill payments to avoid immediate shut-offs. The contacts are being made by people purporting to be Santee Cooper. Please know:

Never provide your social security number, credit card number or banking information to anyone requesting it over the phone, online or at your home unless you initiated the contact and feel confident with whom you are speaking.

When would Santee Cooper request sensitive information?

Santee Cooper will request your credit card information when you call 888-798-3785 or visit to pay your bill by credit card. Santee Cooper will request your bank account information when you go to to pay your bill by electronic check. This is the website you will be referred to when you receive an email regarding your utility bill.
