FRAUD ALERT: Santee Cooper customers target of scam

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Santee Cooper is warning their customers of a scam specifically targeting those they provide to.

On their Facebook page, the utility company wrote:

We're hearing about a scam targeting our customers, especially commercial customers, demanding credit card numbers for bill payments to avoid immediate shut-offs. The contacts are being made by people purporting to be Santee Cooper. Please know:

Never provide your social security number, credit card number or banking information to anyone requesting it over the phone, online or at your home unless you initiated the contact and feel confident with whom you are speaking.

When would Santee Cooper request sensitive information?

Santee Cooper will request your credit card information when you call 888-798-3785 or visit https://paymentssanteecooper.billmatrix.com/ to pay your bill by credit card. Santee Cooper will request your bank account information when you go to http://san.inetbiller.com/ to pay your bill by electronic check. This is the website you will be referred to when you receive an email regarding your utility bill.

A Santee Cooper representative may ask you to provide the last four digits of your social security number when you contact the representative to inquire about your account - this could be by phone, email or on live chat at santeecooper.com.

For more information on payment options, go to santeecooper.com and click on pay my bill at the top of the page.

If you receive a call claiming to be from your utility company and feel pressured for immediate payment or personal information, hang up the phone. You can call Santee Cooper at (843) 347-3399 in Horry or Georgetown counties or (843) 761-8000 in Berkeley County to verify whether or not a customer service representative was trying to contact you.

Never allow anyone into your home to check electrical wiring or appliances unless you have scheduled an appointment or have reported a utility problem. Also, ask utility employees for proper identification. If you feel uncertain, call Santee Cooper at (843) 347-3399 in Horry or Georgetown counties or (843) 761-8000 in Berkeley County to verify a technician has been sent to your residence.

Always think safety first. Do not give in to high-pressure tactics over the phone for information or in person to get into your home.
