Store preps for Black Friday crowds

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Retailers across the country are gearing up for the biggest holiday shopping event of the year. Danielle Flores, store manager of the Target off of Hwy 544 says the store's team is getting last minute preps crossed off the list.

Every isle of the store will be fully stocked before Thanksgiving night. The goal is to have it all done by closing time Wednesday evening. Flores says they're paying extra attention to items they know shoppers will flock to like TV's.

Part of the prep work for Black Friday has been hiring extra staff and scheduling Target team members. Flores says seasonal employees were hired early enough so every target team member is familiar with the layout of the store.

Another part of employee training focused on dealing with the anticipated large crowds. Flores says they want a safe Black Friday experience for everyone.

"Especially with that initial crowd outside, so we'll have people outside monitoring the lines. They'll be out there making sure that the line is flowing smoothly when we open the doors. I don't anticipate any concerns from a crowd control standpoint," Flores explained.

This will be Target's first year opening Thanksgiving night at 9 p.m. Black Friday hours seeping into Thanksgiving night has some unhappy employees sounding off in other parts of the country, some even petitioning against it. According to Flores, most of the Target team members at this location are pumped.

Flores says they tried to work with employees when it came to scheduling, especially for those who have more than one job. She pointed out there are incentives, with many of the employees working the overnight hours qualifying for time and half pay.

Since a lot of the last minute prep work will be done on Wednesday, most employees working that first shift won't have to report to the store until a couple of hours before doors open.

"Our team was really excited about it actually. We were able to accommodate a lot of our team that wanted to work that evening. It's our first one and it's really exciting to work that night," Flores said. "We were also able to accommodate team members that maybe couldn't or that weren't able to work that evening."
