NMB discusses more residential development

Posted: Updated:

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - North Myrtle Beach City Council discussed a proposal Monday to change a 64-acre area of land at Barefoot Landing.

Council decided to hold a workshop to discuss the proposal in more detail. Mayor Marilyn Hatley motioned to hold the workshop and the council members unanimously agreed.

"I'm a little concerned with not having the drawings or anything in here about what kind of commercial were actually talking about," Mayor Hatley said.

The 64 acres of land off Barefoot Resort Bridge Road was amended in 2007 to be developed into a commercial town center. Now the land owner wants to change 28 acres of that land into residential property. If passed, the 28 acres would become roughly 80 single family homes and 50 town homes.

According to Barefoot Resort Board Member Lawton Dews, the remaining 38 acres would eventually become commercial businesses, but it would happen in three separate phases, so as to not bring too much to the area too soon.

Dews spoke during the public comment period at the meeting, stating he'd like to see more commercial development because it would make the area more appealing to potential residents and to tourists.

"The demand and the desire for that kind of commercial aspect I think is very very desired," Dews said.

Dews said having commercial property on that particular side of the swing bridge would also add convenience to residents.

Dews said nothing has been built on this property because of the economic ups and downs, and that continues to be a key reason several people are still hesitant on what exactly should be built on this land.

"We certainly don't want to have so much commercial put in there that it wouldn't make it in today's economy," Dews said.
