Some Black Friday deals not as good as advertised

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Black Friday looms as the official kickoff to the Christmas shopping season, though many businesses are already getting a leg up. But some of the deals and doorbusters offered the Friday after Thanksgiving may not save you as much money as you think.

While many retailers offer great deals and discounts on hot gift items, some discounts don't actually save you a lot of money because those items may actually be priced higher than their suggested retail value.

"Sometimes stores will mark it up just to mark it down," said JC Penney Manager Lisa Parsons.

JC Penney is shying away from doorbuster deals and time-sensitive discounts this Black Friday. Instead, they're offering different incentives to get customers in the door.

"Each customer can get 2 buttons per day," said Parsons, pointing to a series of Christmas-themed buttons. "They can win trips and prizes and certificates for holidays."

Some shoppers say they put up with the stress and early mornings of Black Friday because they do find some genuinely good deals.

"I'm always looking for bargains and we've got a large family," said shopper Lisa Ousley. "Anything in the toy flier, we're looking for those things."

It's best to have a shopping list ready when you go into a store, because many items marked on sale won't actually be things you intend on buying in the first place.
