Holiday changes at Myrtle Beach International Airport

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF)- If you are traveling during the holiday season and have not flown in a while, Myrtle Beach International Airport might look a little different and possibly even confusing for you.

"It looks a lot different actually," Said Ryan Redmond who stopped at the airport to pick up a friend.  "It's always changing, I was here just a couple of days ago and it's different from then."

The airport is undergoing major construction for its new entrance and the new wing that is set to open early next year.

To help cope with the high volume of holiday traffic, the airport is opening up 260 additional parking spaces in overflow lots.  The extra spots are needed ahead of the busiest travel day of the year.

About 50 million Americans are expected to travel the day before Thanksgiving.

"Wednesday is a big day," Said Kirk Lovell with MYR.  "It will be a mass exodus of people leaving Myrtle Beach to go visit loved ones."

There will be signs directing you to the lots to help you park in time before your flight.

"Most of the parking is going to be in our ready return lot," Said Lovell.  "However you will access it following the signage that will tell you if the normal parking lot is full and it will point you in the right direction to get you where you need to park."

There are ways you can avoid paying to park.

"If you can have someone else drop you off at the airport and come pick you back up that will definitely make things a lot easier," Said Lovell.  "You should also arrive earlier than normal, so you do have time to circle and find a spot and still have time to make your flight."

You will have to pay the normal parking rates in the overflow lots; the rates are explained on the airport's website.
