Summit looks at creating more jobs in Horry County

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – If you are looking for a job there is some good news; one group on the Grand Strand is working to bring more jobs to Horry County.

At the first Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Council retreat, numerous leaders in the county gathered so talk about the importance of bringing new jobs to the Grand Strand.

This year, the MBREDC has helped bring 400 new jobs to the area.  Several of these jobs were unveiled after they were kept secret under names like "Project AF" and "Project Blue."

The confidentiality of these plans may make it hard to find out how to apply for these jobs, but officials say the secrecy is key to bringing companies to Horry County.

"If Horry County is recruiting a project it doesn't want some other community finding out about it," Said Burnet Maybank who spoke to the group about confidentiality projects.  "The other county could offer a better deal and then all of a sudden the project is gone purely because of a leak from county council."

Right now, the MBREDC said there are more than 20 new projects in the works to bring about 5,000 new jobs to the Grand Strand.  Brad Lofton with the MBREDC said that is a strong showing for the area.

"According to the commerce department in an email we received last week that's one of the top one or two largest pipelines in the state so we are proud of that," Said Lofton.

Until the projects are officially announced, Lofton said people looking to apply for these jobs should brush off their resumes.

"Look at industries that are creating jobs like health care, technology, corporate headquarters, the manufacturing targets that we're working on," Said Lofton.  "Match your skills or qualifications with those companies we are locating and you'll have a good opportunity to find work."
