HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Horry County Fire Rescue Officials are investigating what caused a fire that forced the couple living inside out of the house.

HCFR spokeswoman Leslie Yancey tells WMBF News the two alarm fire on Pitch Landing Road broke out in a two story residential building.

Ollie Rowe lives in the home with his wife, and says he was burning wood in the fireplace before the fire started.  Rowe says he thought he took all the necessary precautions to avoid a fire.

"We closed all the drafts up on the [fireplace] and everything," Rowe says. "we've been doing it 15 years the same way."

Horry County Fire rescue Assistant Chief Scott Thompson says it's unclear why the fire started in the chimney, but hopes this fire is a wake up call to anyone making use of a chimney this winter.

"people are going to be using their fireplaces...for warmth," Thompson says.  "We just want to make sure they have the chimneys cleaned and inspected to make sure there's no problems."

Thompson says burning wood can often leave flammable deposits inside a chimney, which, uncleaned can flare up.  Chimneys can also develop cracks over time, Thompson says, allowing fire to escape into other parts of a home.

When crews arrived flames were showing from the building. No injuries were reported, and everyone from the building was able to evacuate safely.

The road was closed because crews extended fire hoses across the road to help douse the flames By 1:30 p.m. the fire was placed under control.

Officials with Horry County Fire Rescue believe the fire started in the chimney and then extended into the surrounding attic structure.

Rowe says he and his wife will stay in a rental house they own nearby until repairs are complete on their home damaged by fire.
