Horry County Schools get yearly report card

Posted: Updated:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) Horry County Schools received a rating of good overall from the state of South Carolina on Tuesday.

Myrtle Beach High School was one of those schools in the county with a rating of excellent. Principal of 11 years, Nona Kerr, announced the news over the schools P. A. system.

"We got an of excellent absolute rating and excellent improvement rating," stated Kerr.

Kerr said the school spent last year improving on special need students and programs to close the schools achievement gap. She said for this year her and her administration will continue to do what they have been doing along with letting students know where they stand academically on the walls of the school.

"We had to go back and really look at our data to see where we were. Where was our serious areas of need and where we're being successful. Then we had to figure out how could we revisit our master schedule and the time in our day to give more time to students," said Kerr.

Throughout Myrtle Beach High on the walls are progress charts so students can see where their excelling and places where they are not. Other schools like Whittemore Park Middle School may start implementing something similar.

Beard is the Principal at Whittemore Park Middle School and she said she is there to turn things around as she has in previous Horry County Schools. Whittemore Park Middle School got a score of average in growth and achievement which for Beard is not acceptable, "we realize we have a lot of work to do we are not we're we need to be there is always room for improvement and we don't want to be considered average so we're circling our wagons and doing everything we can to move this school upward."

A grant from the Gates Foundation is giving Whittemore Park Middle School 150,000 dollars to go towards new technologies for the classroom for three years.

Whittemore Park Middle School is also partnering with area colleges to focus for career learning something Beard said will turn around the rating of the school and the stigma associated with it. Beard said it may take years for the school to start to excel on ratings like the yearly state's report card, but Beard believes if everyone works together at Whittemore Park Middle School they can do it.
