WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A local actor faced some real-life drama when he was shot while trying to thwart an armed robbery.

In an interview with WECT, Jazz Undy talked about his experience.

It started when a couple was held up at gunpoint near the corner of 6th and Castle Street. The robbers stole their wallet and purse.

Undy, who was leaving nearby restaurant, Rx, noticed the robbers running away. He said to one of them, "Drop the purse, I'm calling police." Undy waved his cell phone above his head. He tells us the robber reached into his waistband and pulled out a gun. He fired one shot at Undy, hitting him in his hip.

"I never saw him point it at me," he said. "All I felt was the boom. It happened that fast. You feel instant pain. Your body feels instant pain."

The bullet is lodged in Undy's pelvis; but he is expected to be OK. Today, he is using a walker to get around and said he is in extreme pain.

When asked why he risked his life, Undy said it was instinct.

"I didn't want anyone to get their purse stolen," he said. "It really irritates me that you feel the need to steal something. Get a job."

Undy, who works as an actor, is looking on the bright side.

He said he will draw on this when auditioning and acting in future roles.

"It's sort of a gift for me in this field," he said. "Firsthand now, I know what your body goes through and the shock. It's going to be very useful to me in many facets."

However, he wishes his attempt to stop the criminals would have been successful.

Undy said, "I wish I could have been a better hero; I wish everybody could have just walked away."

The suspects are described as being dressed in all black and wearing hooded sweatshirts. Both men are said to have a medium build. One is about 5'8" and the other is about 6 feet tall.

Anyone with information on the suspects is asked to call the Wilmington Police Department at 910-343-3600.You can also submit information anonymously through Text-A-Tip. Enter Tip708 and the information; send to CRIMES (274637).
