Suspect approaches victims, robs them at ATM

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – In today's hectic world, it can be tough to get to the bank during business hours. Luckily, that's where ATM's come in. But, if you're not careful, an ATM can become the perfect spot for a crime.

"Always be alert, watch what's happening around you," said ATM user Dale Hobson. That's advice two banking customers should have heeded Tuesday night while making a deposit at a Wells Fargo on Oak Street. At the deposit box, police say a man approached the victims and robbed them at gunpoint.

"People think because the ATM is close to the bank and cameras, they're safe," Hobson says. "But criminals are getting better at getting around that."

WMBF News asked several banking customers what they do to stay safe at ATMs, and all pretty much mentioned the same three things: mind your surroundings, keep your valuables close, and stay in your car if possible.

"If you go to an ATM on foot to get money, it's much easier for a person to rob you," said banking customer Margaret Gadnor.

The suspect at the Wells Fargo fled into the woods behind the building, and is still on the run. Anyone with information is asked to call the Myrtle Beach Police Department.
