Land owners dispel rumors about local development project

Posted: Updated:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) Jackson Companies, the company who owns the land at the Highway 544 and 17-Bypass intersection say all the speculation about what will move into the newly leveled land is all rumors.

Steve Alger, Vice President of Development for the Jackson Companies said the land was leveled for pre-development purposes.

"Knowing that this is the last corner on that important intersection. And, really we were just preparing it for future development that we think will happen at some point in the future. We're not sure what that is yet although because of the activities we've recently completed, we've certainly had interest in it. But at this time, we're not prepared to go forward with any development," Alger said.

Several Horry County residents voiced their opinions and beliefs on what might eventually call the space home. Alger said it's safe to say, all speculation is just that. The most common rumor heard was that a Tanger Outlet mall would make its way onto the land. Alger negated that rumor as did a media relations correspondent with Tanger Outlet.

80 acres of land was leveled, but a Jackson Companies official said only about 40 acres will be used once something moves into the area.

According to Horry County Spokesperson Lisa Bourcier, the land is part of a larger tract that is zoned currently zoned Planned Development District (PDD), which allows for mixture of residential, commercial, office, industrial uses on a single site.
